DS-160photo rules
The digital photo is checked by the form itself and again by the officer.
DS-160 Photo requirements
The photo is uploaded near the end of the DS-160. If it does not meet the technical rules, CEAC rejects the upload. If it passes the upload but breaks other rules, the photo can still cause delays at the interview.
The file
- Colour photo in JPEG format
- Square: the same width and height
- At least 600 × 600 and at most 1200 × 1200 pixels
- File size up to 240 KB
Framing
- Head from chin to top of hair: 50% to 69% of the image height
- Eyes between 56% and 69% of the image height, measured from the bottom
- Face straight to the camera and fully visible, centred in the frame
- Plain white or off-white background without shadows or patterns
Appearance
- Taken within the last six months
- Neutral expression, both eyes open
- No glasses
- No hat or head covering, except for religious or medical reasons; the face must stay fully visible
- No filters, retouching or edited background
Printed photos
If you need a printed photo, for example because the upload failed, it must measure 5 × 5 cm (2 × 2 inches) and follow the same rules for framing and appearance.
